Master Lyons
Master Lyons began his training in the late seventies and is a 6th Dan Black Belt, HapKiDo Master.  He began studying Shotokan Karate, Judo, and Tae Kwon Do all at the tender age of 16. After months of training, he decided to look even further into other martial arts. One morning in the fall of 1981, he and a friend from college decided to seek out an art they heard about called HapKiDo. There was only one place teaching this art and it was more than an hour away. They found the school placed in the middle of a shopping center and decided to look in the window before going inside. What they saw amazed them both. People were not only doing kicks and punches but they were rolling around on the mat, grabbing and twisting each other in ways not seen by either of them before. An older gentleman taking the class came to them and invited them in.

After taking his first class, his love of HapKiDo was realized which set him on his path. Master Lyons dedicated himself to the art of HapKiDo. Starting as a white belt, he began competing on the national sparring circuit traveling up and down the East coast almost every weekend, ending with his goal of winning the Maryland State Grand Championship in 1993. During the tournament scene, a friend asked for private training for an upcoming kickboxing match to which he agreed. His friend won the match, which prompted more requests to be trained by Master Lyons. So began the inspiration for opening his school.

In 1991 Penn-Mar Martial Arts was born. After four successful years in Maryland, his school outgrew its current location and moved to a new facility in Littlestown, Pa. which opened April 1st 1996, where it remains to this day.

Master Lyons is a senior student of Grandmaster J.R.West of Ridgeland, Mississippi. GM West is President of the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation and Vice President of the United States HapKiDo operations for the KiDoHwe (the governing body of HapKiDo in Korea).

Master Lyons currently holds the rank of 6th Dan and is only the second person to be promoted to that rank by Grandmaster West.
